Israel ETA Overview
What It Is
- The Israel ETA is a new entry requirement for visa-exempt travelers.
- Similar to the U.S. ESTA or Canada’s eTA, it acts as a pre-screening travel authorization.
- Travelers must apply online and get approval before boarding a flight to Israel.
Who Needs It
- As of January 1st, 2025, travelers to Israel must have a valid visa or ETA-IL approval before starting their journey.
Visa-exempt nationals: Citizens of countries like the U.S., Canada, most of Europe, and others who previously could just arrive without a visa.
Not required for:
- Israeli citizens or permanent residents.
- Travelers who already hold a valid visa.
How It Works
- Application: Submitted online through Israel’s official portal.
- Information Required: Personal details, passport information, travel plans, and background/security questions.
- Processing Time: Usually fast (often within 24–72 hours).
- Validity: Generally valid for multiple entries over a period (expected 2 years or until passport expires).
- Fee: A small processing fee is charged.
Timeline
- Pilot program: Began in 2024 with limited countries.
- Full rollout: As of January 1st, 2025, travelers to Israel must have a valid visa or ETA-IL approval before starting their journey.
Key Notes for Travelers
- Must apply before traveling; airlines may deny boarding without an approved ETA.
- The ETA is not a visa, just an entry pre-authorization. Final entry is still determined by border control.
- Applying early is recommended in case additional checks are needed.
