What is a limited-validity passport, and why was I issued one?

A limited-validity passport is typically valid for less than the standard 10 years for adults or 5 years for minors (16 years and younger). Such passports are often issued under special circumstances, such as:

  • Emergency travel needs
  • Pending documentation (e.g., awaiting a naturalization certificate)
  • Ongoing legal matters (e.g., name changes)
  • Multiple lost or stolen passports

The accompanying letter with your passport should specify the reason for its limited validity.
