APEC Business Travel Card: Process Look Like?
Interested in applying for the APEC Business Travel Card (ABTC)? Here's a step-by-step look at what the process involves—especially for U.S. citizens.
Step 1: Make Sure You’re Eligible
To apply in the U.S., you must:
- Be a U.S. citizen
- Be a member of Global Entry
- Have a valid U.S. passport
- Be a verified business traveler to the APEC region
- Have no disqualifying criminal history
💡 If you’re not already in Global Entry, apply through the Trusted Traveler Programs (TTP) site before starting your APEC application.
Step 2: Apply Online
Go to the Trusted Traveler Programs (TTP) website:
- Log into your account
- Select “APEC Business Travel Card”
- Fill out the application
- Pay the $70 fee
Step 3: Background Check
Your application goes through a security review by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP). If you’re already a Global Entry member, this part is usually straightforward.
Step 4: International Vetting
If you want visa-free access to other APEC countries (beyond just the U.S. fast lanes), your information may be shared with participating APEC economies for additional approval.
Note: U.S. citizens currently do not receive visa-free entry, but can still use expedited APEC lanes at airports abroad.
Step 5: Get Your Card
Once approved, your ABTC will be mailed to you. The card is valid for five years or until your passport expires—whichever comes first.
Step 6: Use It When Traveling
Use your APEC card to:
- Access dedicated fast lanes at immigration
- Simplify and speed up travel for business trips in the Asia-Pacific region
How Long Does It Take?
Processing can vary, but on average:
- 4 to 8 weeks if you're already in Global Entry
- Longer if you’re applying for both Global Entry and ABTC at the same time
