REAL ID Checklist

To apply for a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license or identification card, you’ll need to bring specific documents to your DMV or licensing office. Here's a simple checklist to help you prepare:


1. Proof of Identity

Bring one of the following:

  • Valid, unexpired U.S. passport or passport card
  • Certified copy of a U.S. birth certificate
  • Certificate of Naturalization or Citizenship
  • Permanent Resident Card (Green Card)

2. Proof of Social Security Number

Bring one of the following:

  • Social Security card
  • W-2 form or 1099 with full SSN
  • Pay stub with full SSN

3. Proof of State Residency (2 documents)

Bring two of the following showing your name and residential address:

  • Utility bill (electric, water, internet, etc.)
  • Rental or lease agreement
  • Mortgage statement
  • Bank statement
  • Official government mail (e.g., tax return, voter registration)

4. Name Change Documents (if applicable)

If your current name is different from your identity documents:

  • Marriage certificate
  • Divorce decree
  • Court order for name change

5. Appointment (if required)

  • Some DMV offices require an appointment for REAL ID—check your state DMV website.

Starting May 7, 2025, you’ll need a REAL ID (or a valid passport) to:

  • Board domestic flights
  • Access certain federal buildings
  • Enter military bases
