Do I need a visa to China?
As of June 2025, China has significantly expanded its visa-free entry policies to include nationals from 43 countries, allowing them to enter Mainland China without a visa for business, tourism, family visits, cultural exchanges, or transit purposes. This initiative aims to boost international travel and strengthen diplomatic ties.
Countries with Visa-Free Access to China
The following countries’ citizens holding ordinary passports can enter China visa-free for up to 30 days:
- Europe: Andorra, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Monaco, Montenegro, Netherlands, North Macedonia, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland
- Asia: Brunei, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, South Korea
- Oceania: Australia, New Zealand
- South America: Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Peru, Uruguay
- Middle East: Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Saudi Arabia
These visa exemptions are generally valid until December 31, 2025, with some countries’ exemptions extending into 2026.
Important Considerations
- Purpose of Visit: Visa-free entry is granted for purposes such as business, tourism, visiting family and friends, cultural exchanges, and transit. Activities like employment, study, or journalism still require appropriate visas.
- Duration: The visa-free stay is limited to 30 days. Extensions are generally not permitted under the visa-free policy.
- Entry Requirements: Travelers must hold a valid passport with at least six months’ validity and may be required to provide proof of onward travel and accommodation.
- Policy Changes: Visa policies are subject to change. Travelers should consult the official websites of the Chinese embassy or consulate in their country and check with their airline for the most current information before planning their trip.
