Identifying a REAL ID
1. Look for the REAL ID Star
A REAL ID-compliant license or ID card will have one of the following symbols in the upper-right corner:
- ⭐ Gold or black star (most states)
- 🟡 Gold circle with a white star (some states)
- ⚠️ If it says “Not for Federal Identification” or lacks a star, it’s not a REAL ID.
2. Check the Physical Security Features
REAL IDs include built-in security features, which vary by state. Look for:
- Holograms or color-shifting images
- Microprinting that is difficult to reproduce
- Raised text you can feel with your finger
- Ghost image (a smaller, faded photo of the holder)
- UV elements are visible under a blacklight

3. Check Barcode and Data Matching
On the back of most REAL IDs is a barcode or magnetic stripe:
- Use a scanner or ID verification app to read it.
- Ensure the data (name, DOB, ID number) matches what’s printed on the front.
4. Match the Person to the ID
- Compare the photo, height, eye color, and signature to the person.
- Watch for signs of tampering like bubbling, peeling edges, or mismatched fonts.
5. Verify with the Issuing Authority (if needed)
- Contact your state DMV or use a credential verification system (e.g., for employers using E-Verify).
