What Is a REAL ID?

You may have heard people talking about “REAL ID,” especially when it comes to travel. But what exactly is it, and why does it matter?

🪪 What Is a REAL ID?

A REAL ID is a special type of driver’s license or state ID that meets new federal security standards. It looks almost the same as your current license, but you’ll notice a gold star in the corner—that’s how you know it’s REAL ID-compliant.

🛫 Why Do I Need It?

Starting May 7, 2025, you’ll need a REAL ID (or a valid passport) to:

  • Fly within the United States (domestic flights)
  • Enter certain federal buildings
  • Visit military bases

If you don’t have a REAL ID or passport, you won’t be allowed past airport security—even for a flight within the U.S.

What’s the Difference?

Your regular driver’s license may look similar, but it won’t be accepted for these purposes after the deadline unless it’s REAL ID-compliant.

So if you want to travel or access federal facilities easily, it’s time to upgrade.

How Do I Get One?

You’ll need to go to your local DMV in person with the right documents. Here's what you usually need:

  • Proof of identity (like a passport or birth certificate)
  • Proof of Social Security number
  • Two documents showing your current address
  • Any legal documents for name changes (if your name has changed)

DMV appointments can fill up fast, and gathering the right documents can take time. It’s smart to get your REAL ID now so you’re ready when the deadline comes.

Getting a REAL ID is a one-time step that makes future travel and access to secure locations easier. It’s all about improving security and keeping things safe for everyone.

If you fly often—or even just once in a while—it’s definitely worth getting your REAL ID sooner rather than later.
